Show Me What You Are Made Of ! By Editor John Beshears
Senior Night at One Pirate Drive is always a time to shine and the Pirates did that for sure, just not the way we all thought it would be! First quarter was all Pirates jumping on top and carrying a 22 to 10 lead into the second quarter. In the second the Cardinals of Potts Camp had different ideas and outscored the Pirates 19 to 10 closing the gap to 3 at the end of the first half, Pirates led 32 to 29. But this was not the headline of the first half. With just under a minute to go in the half Junior Stanford “Buddy” Spearman, Jr. FOULED OUT! Yep, the rest of the game without Buddy, this should be interesting! Second half opened tough but Senior Marzavion Westbrook took the team on his shoulders and scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half. The TEAM showed what they were made of and gave the Pirate Nation one heck of a show doing so! When the nail biting had ended the Pirates squeaked through with a 65 to 63 win over the Cardinals. Eight Pirates scored during the contest with Senior Marzavion Westbrook leading the way with 19; Sophomore Quin Smith added 12; and Buddy Spearman had 10 rounding out the double digit scoring for the Pirates. On to Hickory Flat to finish up regular season and this was a run away from the start but we saw the growth of the team this night. Seven Pirates got in on the scoring with four in double digits. Leading the Pirates was a mixture, one senior, one junior and one sophomore. Marzavion Westbrook, Stanford “Buddy” Spearman, Jr. and Quin Smith all had 19. Freshman, all four classes represented, Juelz Cooper had 10 points. The final score was 80 to 52, earning the Pirates a Number 1 seed in the upcoming tournament. With the number one seed the Pirates earn a bye and won’t play until Tuesday evening and will meet the winner of the Blue Mountain and Strayhorn game Monday evening. See Y’all at the game
