AREA YOUTH INVITED TO CREATE AND RUN OAKLAND BUSINESS Meeting Set Sunday, June 23, to Assess Interest
Area young people who are interested in starting and running their own community business in Oakland are invited to attend a meeting on Sunday, June 23, at 4 p.m. at the Oakland Area Chamber of Commerce office at 304 Holly Street. The interest level at the meeting will determine if the program moves forward. Parents and students in grades 6-12 are invited. The vision is that the program will be youth-led with adult supervision. It is not necessary to live in Oakland to participate. The Oakland Youth Collaborative (OYC) is an exciting program that offers area middle and high school students the opportunity to become entrepreneurs. Parents and youth will determine meeting times and work sessions. It is anticipated that students will have speakers who can help them generate business ideas, conduct market research, write business plans, pitch to a panel of investors, and launch a new business for Oakland. This program has the potential to impact the entire community. Chamber Youth Advisor Leyah Windom said she is excited to be involved in the program and will be reaching out to youth she knows. She is planning to set up a Facebook page and encourages people to spread the word about the upcoming meeting.
