Miss Torian Carothers, of Three Rivers, is available to our Coffeeville High School students as Career Coach. What do Career Coaches do? Career Coaches have been placed in Mississippi schools to help students with, arguably, the hardest decision that they have to make at such a young age – “What do I want to be and do for the rest of my life??” We have an EPIC 4-step plan to help students answer that for themselves! Step 1 – Expose – A Career Coaches’ first order of business is to get to know the students and expose them to all the different careers and opportunities available to them. Most students have no idea about what all is available right here in Mississippi. Exposing students to these opportunities is not only beneficial to the students, but to our State as well! (Cont’d. on page 12) What do Career Coaches do? Career Coaches have been placed in Mississippi schools to help students with, arguably, the hardest decision that they have to make at such a young age – “What do I want to be and do for the rest of my life??” We have an EPIC 4-step plan to help students answer that for themselves! We’ve already covered Step 1 – Expose. Step 2 – Prepare – Students may graduate from High School, but does that mean they are prepared for work, college or even life? Our Career Coaches work with students on resume writing, interview skills, soft skills, job expectations, applying for employment and college, email and social media etiquette, conflict resolution, essential life skills and many other skills critical to success in the workplace and in life. Knowledge of subject matter is important, but if young people lack basic communication skills, people skills, job search skills, knowledge of workplace expectations, money management skills, time management skills, life skills, and many other keys to success, we are setting them up for failure. Career Coaches help to equip students with these skills as well, to make them a better applicant, a better employee, and a better and more productive and successful person! What do Career Coaches do? EPIC Plan and explained the first 2 phases – Expose and Prepare. Today we highlight the third phase – Investigate! The Investigate phase is where students learn more about themselves and about potentially compatible careers and begin to gather information. Questions like: What is most important to me in a job? How much do I need to make to support my lifestyle? Where do I want to live? Do I want to go to college? What jobs align with my interests? My aptitudes? Are these jobs in demand? What are typical salaries for these jobs? What training or education is involved? What is the job description? Are there opportunities for advancement? And many more questions as students begin to put the pieces of the career search puzzle together. The more information a Career Coach can give a student, the better decisions that student can make about his/her future. This is where it begins to get exciting for the student and the Coach as they work together to make good informed decisions about what’s next!! “What does a Career Coach do?” and we have been discussing our EPIC Plan. We have covered the Expose, Prepare, and Investigate phases and today we talk about the final and most important phase – Connect. The Connect phase is exciting because once a student has narrowed down their career choices, it’s time to see what it’s really like by job shadowing or interning in the actual job they think they want! Career Coaches spend endless hours contacting businesses and industries and interviewing students to make all this happen. Students not only get great experience, but they also make valuable connections that can pay off for them in the near future. This phase is crucial because it actually sets the stage for the rest of that student’s life. Many students that are placed in internships are either hired immediately, are promised future jobs, get their college or training paid for, or gain valuable experience and insight into the world of work that gives them an advantage over other applicants. Career Coaches are definitely making a difference in preparing students for a successful future while also making Mississippi better one student at a time! Stop by and meet your student’s career coach today!
