If you remember the article from last year you already know how much Ms. Tammy loves to take pictures of the outdoors. But, when she can get setup on wild turkeys she tends to go nuts. We had a blast. Around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, April 23rd, we snuck into the field where my brother had been seeing a lot of turkey action and hoped for the best. We were cutting it close because before 3 Ms. Tammy was shooting pics like crazy. Keep in mind she only has one battery and one card for the camera. The gobblers were hung up in the shade about 150 yards and had no intensions of getting out in the sun in 90 degree weather in south Mississippi. I advised her to slow down a little bit and let the sun move a bit and create more shade in the field and she reluctantly did. Right on cue, as the sun moved over and created more shade, the gobblers moved on around and closed the gap to less than a 100 yards. The bigger the shade got the closer they came and eventually got within 50 yards of us for a while. The wild turkey is such an awesome animal to shoot pictures of and one of the gobblers really showed out. There were about eight hens that kept moving around the field, coming and going, and the gobblers were just hanging out keeping an eye on their girls. By the time they left the field headed to roost Ms. Tammy had killed the battery while taking over 1,200 pictures. I look forward to this afternoon each year almost as much as Ms. Tammy does, pretty cool to get them that close and them never know you are there. No shots were fired other than camera shots and no turkeys harmed on this adventure (maybe next time she will let me carry a gun). As Easter has come and gone and summer is well on it’s way get outside and enjoy nature, the Good Lord’s creations are far better than anything else you can be doing. See Y’all out there!
