Saturday, May 19th, the “trail ride” on County Road 66 kept the sheriff’s officers tied up for almost eight hours trying to get the road opened up. From the entrance where the ride was held all the way back to County Road 211 cars were parked on both sides of the road making two way traffic impossible. On top of the traffic issues there was also evidence of people taking a dump between the vehicles! Mrs. Mary Dudley spent over three hours trying to get to her house just past where the ride was held. THREE HOURS to travel a mile! Yalobusha County Sheriff’s officers were called to the scene and proceeded to tow vehicles trying to clear the traffic out. In the rain officers worked hard trying to get the roadway cleared. Hats off to Sheriff Gooch and his officers. Upon following up on this story Monday morning I rode out to County Road 66 to take a look, check distances and talk to a few residents. While there I was told that coming in from the other direction was not an option either in the wet weather, thank God they did not need emergency assistance during all this. When I started back to town I rode back toward Hwy 330 to check the roads and they were correct, a firetruck is not safe on that road even when it is dry and the road was extremely rough. As I got near Hwy 330 I came upon the garbage truck stuck in the ditch, it had slid off the road trying to climb that first hill as it came off Hwy 330 on to County Road 65. Last month the county supervisors had the “Trail Ride” topic come up in a meeting but took no action other than ask the sheriff to help in any way they can.
