The Coffeeville Pirates showed improvement on special teams and on offense Friday night in a 46-14 loss to the J.Z. George Jaguars. The Pirates fell to 0-2 on the 2025 season with the loss.
Despite being held scoreless against Calhoun City during the season opener, the Pirates had a kickoff return for a touchdown in addition to an earlier score on a quarterback keeper by Qua Bland.
Despite the loss, Coach Jerry Richardson felt progress was made from the first game and the team is on track to improve for district play. “We’re 0-2 right now, but it’s still early and we’ve got a lot of football left. Our main goal is to compete and be healthy when district play starts,” Richardson noted.
Coffeeville will travel to Water Valley this Friday for their traditional rivalry game against the Class 3A Blue Devils. WVHS comes into the game with a 2-0 record, having defeated Independence and South Pontotoc so far this season.
“It’s a matchup that hasn’t been played in a couple of years, so I’m expecting a packed crowd and a lot of emotions,” Coach Richardson said. “Water Valley is well coached, and they always play hard. They’ve got a really good running back, and if we don’t wrap him up and get him to the ground, it could be a long night for us.”
Gametime is 7:00 pm on Friday, September 12.
