As the Pirates earned their way into a third seed in the 2025 playoffs there was a glimmer of hope that faded quickly this past Friday night. The West Lowndes Panthers defeated our Pirates and moved on to the second round of the playoffs, but that was not the story for Friday night.
You see Friday night did not just mark the end of the 2025 season for our Pirates, it marked the start of the 2026 season, without a doubt. You see this team has not quit all year, not once! The leadership on and off the field, from coaches to upperclassman, did not quit on them and they stood strong. Although the 3 and 8 season doesn’t look so hot in reality it is.
Coach Richardson and his staff have stood with our Pirates all the way and it is a young team with only three seniors, a couple of juniors and the rest are sophomores and freshman. Friday night at the final buzzer of the final game for the Pirates in the 2025 campaign the 2026 season began. Strength training, recruiting underclassmen (8th graders) and spring practice on the horizon (and hopefully a spring scrimmage mixed in).
As we watched every game we saw the growth of young men, the leadership of the seniors: Tacorian Reed, Pattreveon Logan and Marquavius Bland. These three young men led with honor: “T” Reed on the line, both sides of the ball, not sure he missed a play all year; “Money” Logan, playing wherever he was needed, running back, receiver, defense; “Qua” Bland, standing tall no matter how many times he got knocked down as QB, playing defense, giving 200% on every play. True leaders, respected by their teammates and coaches alike.
As the year progressed I gained alot of respect for Coach Richardson and even saw some growth in him along the way. As the editor of the local rag we get to see alot of sports events and we get close to alot of coaches and learn along the way what makes a “real” coach. I won’t go into details as to what that takes, being a “real” coach, but I can tell you Coach Jerry Richardson is for “real”!
Come on 2026!
