90 YEARS AGO May 4, 1934 On Thursday morning of this week The Bank of Water Valley opened an office bank here in the bank building formerly by the Coffeeville Bank, with Mr. E. C. Coleman in charge. Pilgrim’s Rest Honor Roll: First Grade, William Henry Nelson, Oliver Walters; Second Grade, Carl Landreth, Kenneth French; Third Grade, Mary Louise Nelson, Ruth Thomas, Mildred Lee Walters; Fourth Grade, James Nelson, Doris Thomas; Sixth Grade, Helen Landreth. 85 YEARS AGO April 28, 1939 Mr. J. C. Little sold his interest in the planing mill and sawmill operation to his partner, C. V. Beadles, it was announced this week. Funeral services for Mr. Wiley Polk Walker were held Tuesday afternoon at Goshen. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Fancher and family moved to town Monday, having moved into the Robbins home that they recently purchased. 80 YEARS AGO April 28, 1944 A large crowd attended the graduation exercised in the Oakland School Auditorium last Tuesday evening, April 18, when 17 boys and girls received their diplomas. Pauline Landreth, class valedictorian, spoke words of welcome, followed by Ann Martin, who gave the salutatorian address. The passing of John S. Hight at his home in Gatewood early Tuesday morning brought genuine sorrow to the people of this section where he was held in the highest esteem. 75 YEARS AGO May 5, 1949 Lula Dell and Mary Alice Fancher were among the 165 students at Miss. Southern College who made the honor roll for the winter quarter. Mr. and Mrs. James Franklin Hughes were married on March 22, 1949 at the Oakland Methodist Church. The bride is the former Pauline Landreth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clide Vernon Landreth, Oakland. Betty Lou Landreth was given first place and Ouida Mae Vick second place in the American Legion Auxiliary’s Essay Contest. 70 YEARS AGO May 6, 1954 In the election Tuesday of this week for a County Board of Education, Edwin Smith was elected in Beat Five, Henry Perkins in Beat One, Wayne Williamson in Beat Two, J. B. Massey in Beat Three and George Langston in Beat Four. Tommy McCormack’s Superette will be opening for business Friday and Saturday of this week. 8:30 Friday morning is the official time set. Mrs. Ira Dees, aged 82, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, April 28, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. O. Ayers where she had lived for several years. Gerald Denley, Editor of The Courier turned the first shovel of dirt for the new Southern Bell Telephone office. Work has already begun on the building on Clyde Aston’s lot here on Sand Street. 40 YEARS AGO May 3, 1984 The Easter Eve tornado in Water Valley claimed seven lives and left around 100 people injured. Damage has begun an estimate between $25 and $30 million. 410 homes were affected by the storm besides the businesses, churches, and public buildings, 106 homes were totally destroyed, 121 had major damaged 165 suffered moderate damage. 11 mobile homes were destroyed and 4 damaged. Robert Edward Clay, Rolena Jones, Joel W. Purdy, Kenneth Harold Purdy, and Gary Brown Jackson are candidates for degrees at the conclusion of the 1984 Spring Semester at Miss. State. 20 YEARS AGO May 6, 2004 Mary Jean Spiers Pittman, 62, of Wiggins, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, in Hattiesburg. Louis Robert Tillman, 64, of Sardis, formerly of Tillatoba, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at his residence, of heart failure. Emma Louise Logan, 50, of Chicago, IL, died April 20, 2004. Modie Mae Harbin, 66, retired school bus driver and school cafeteria worker, died at her home in Scobey, on Saturday, May 1, 2004. York Wortham, 94, farmer, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the North Mississippi Medical Center, West Point. 15 YEARS AGO May 7, 2009 Col. Jesse Joseph Atkins died Thursday, April 30, 2009. Mr. William R. “Bill” Johnsey, 75, of Coffeeville, died Monday, May 4, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. 10 YEARS AGO May 8, 2014 Robert Lee Toole, 78, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014 in Memphis, Tn. Robert Lee was born in Enid, MS on September 25, 1935 to James A. Toole and Janie Lee McCullar Toole. Jonathan Lee (Jon) Patterson, 55, of Water Valley, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at his residence.
