85 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 16, 1940 Lieutenant Julian Knox Morrison, Jr., son of M. J. Morrison, was buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, Tuesday of this week. On Wednesday evening of this week Mr. John M. French passed away at his home a few miles east of town where he had lived all but five of his 87 years. 80 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 9, 1945 Sgt. Dewey Lowrimore was reported missing in action December 23, 1944. He entered the service April 26, 1944 and went overseas to France October 26 where he was in the Infantry. The Ralph Peepleses have moved to their newly remodeled home on Bailey Boulevard and Peeples Avenue. Funeral services were held last week in Colbert, Texas for George Wallace Tierce, 67, who died there January 26. Cpl. Taylor W. Lowrimore entered the service October 6, 1942. After training service he went overseas in New Netherland East Indies where he is in heavy artillery of the Infantry. 75 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 16, 1950 The entire town and community are much concerned about Mr. Hattie Leonard who now has pneumonia. James McCrory Page, retired farmer of Yalobusha County, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. H. Adams. 70 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 16, 1950 Charles Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Jones and Edward Woodall, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Woodall, were awarded Eagle Badges recently in a service at the Coffeeville Methodist Church. The Coffeeville Courier has been authorized to announce the candidacy of Guy C. Shaw for reelection as Tax Assessor of Yalobusha County. From the Baptist Hospital in Jackson comes an announcement of the birth of David Michael Dean February 1. The parents are Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Dean, Jr., of Jackson. 60 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 11, 1965 Ralph Lawrence Peeples was recently chosen Lincoln County Outstanding Young Man of the Year. Announcement of the selection was made at the annual banquet of the Brookhaven Junior Chamber of Commerce. In a meeting of the 84-member Refuge Hunting Club of Greenville, last Saturday night, Chester Pate was awarded a gold trophy designating him as “Best Sport” for the 1964-65 season. The scholarship honor list of Clark College, released this week, includes the name of Jimmy Martin. 55 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 7, 1970 Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Gene Burney are the proud parents of a fifth son who was born Monday, February 2, in the Grenada Hospital. He has been named Paul Harvard Burney. South Central Bell Telephone Co. Has recently completed a $22,987 project which extended telephone service for the following new subscribers in the Turkey Creek Community. They are Creed Coker, Hosea Dawkins, Jr., Hosea Dawkins, Sr., S. O. Farris, Mrs. A. L. Fielder, Billy Fielder, T. D. Fielder, M. H. Harbour, Dave Hovey, Claude Hughes, G. W. Hughes, M. S. Langham, Edwin A. Shaw, Guy Dale Shaw, Ord Shaw, Pete Turner, Mrs. Lila S. Turner and Mrs. J. W. Walters. 45 years ago February 7, 1980 Clyde Pace of Coffeeville was elected president of the Mississippi State University Alumni Association recently. Mrs. Ella Jean Pipkin has been named manager of Bill’s Dollar Store here in Coffeeville. 40 years ago February 7, 1985 Alton Wayne Pollan of Coffeeville has been named to The University of Mississippi Dean’s honor roll for the 1984 Fall Semester. Doris Pomerlee and Mack Tuggle, accounting majors of Coffeeville, and Debra Townes, political science major of Tillatoba, have made the 1984 fall semester honor roll at Alcorn State University. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bennie Williams of Halleville, Texas are announcing the birth of a son, born January 30. He has been named Hervey Edward Williams. Mr. Clyde Shelton Pace died Friday, February 8, at Baptist Medical Center Jackson after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Sunday, February 10 at Coffeeville Baptist Church. Mrs. Edna Brister Pate Forman, widow of V. C. Forman, died Thursday, February 7, at Grenada County Hospital following a long illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 9, at the Coffeeville Baptist Church. Another snow, on top of the remaining sleet and ice that has been around for 10 days or more, came Monday of this week and again we have a white covering on yards and homes. Lt. Col. Leonard Richard Lepicier (USA, ret.) died Sunday, February 3, at his home in Aberdeen. Mr. Lepicier was a brother-in-law of Mrs. E. E. Stidham and a former resident of Coffeeville. Gerald Wade Crowell, 48, farmer of Oakland, died Wednesday, January 30, at his home.
