90 YEARS AGO April 12, 1935 The school here will close one of the best sessions in the history of the school next weekend. Those bidding CHS farewell are: Artelle Sellers, Valedictorian; Freddie Rounsaville, Salutatorian; Mary Lee Pittman, Sudie Harbour, Virginia Morgan, Effie Ruth Cunningham, Marjorie Rounsaville, Ruth LaCook, Loryn Porter, Madge Arrington, Isaac Pittman, Jim Spell and Bob Arrington. Walker Wood, Secretary of State and Candidate for reelection, was in Coffeeville last Thursday shaking hands with his many friends and forming new acquaintances. 85 YEARS AGO April 12, 1940 The many friends of R. B. Scobey, Jr., will be glad to hear that he has landed the job of Superintendent of Maintenance with the Mississippi Highway Department. Miss Leora Simpson, who is now working in the University of Shawnee, Oklahoma, has accepted a position as Supt. of Nurses in the Baptist Hospital in Muskogee, Oklahoma. 80 YEARS AGO April 13, 1945 Two destructive fires last week: The home of Mrs. Minnie Davis, above Scuna Valley, was destroyed by fire last Thursday at noon. Late last Thursday the Judge Moring house here in town, occupied by Mr. E. E. Sayle and family, burned. Sue Ellen Pate will deliver the salutatory address and Mary Alice Fancher will deliver the valedictory address at teh graduation exercises in the school auditorium Thursday night. Other members of the class are Mattie Basinger, Eva Brandon, Ernestine Brower, Mary Floyd, Jean McCracken, Bessie Melton, Mamie Miller, Faye Saucier, Dorothy Simpson, Daisey Summers, Erma Faye Terrell, Anne Lou Vick, Dean Arrington, Paul Criss Denley, Irvin Griffin, T. G. Lawrence, Ira Pittman, Jr., Hugh Wilbourn and Kenneth French. 75 YEARS AGO April 13, 1950 Twenty-eight seniors will receive their diplomas Friday night, April 21. The valedictory address will be given by Dorothy Helm and the salutatory address by Donald Summers. Bobby Hutchins, Jason Jordan, Donald Summers and Bobby Gene Burney, the boys’ quartet, under the direction of the teacher, Mrs. V. M. Bell, won an “Excellend” rating in the District Chorus Festival at Oxford last Saturday morning. 70 YEARS AGO April 13, 1955 Barbara Ann Branum, one of Coffeeville’s specially talented young ladies, has been honored recently by having an oil painting of hers placed in the student exhibition, now open at the Memphis Academy of Art. First Grade Honor Roll: Cynthia Denley, Carolyn Sue Gray, James Burden, Jr., Patricia Ann McNulty, Ricky Denley, Mike Jones, Linda Johnson, Greg McCormack, Steve Brower, Sue Shaw, Delores Wright, Peggy Tribble and Julia Shaw. Carl Morris Brandon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Brandon, and Bobby Ray Shaw, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orien Shaw, are candidates for degrees at State College 65 YEARS AGO April 14, 1960 One of the occupants of the car which struck a bridge abutment on Highway 51, four miles south of Grenada, Saturday night was Jackie Floyd, 15-year-old brother of Mrs. Aaron Burney. Roy Spurgeon of Grenada is making plans to open a coin-operated laundromat on the back part of his lot here in town within the next few months. Among the 15 juniors at MSCW who were tapped for membership in “Motar Board”, national honor society, is Terry Denley of Coffeeville. 45 YEARS AGO April 3, 1980 Pam Bell was among the Northwest Mississippi Junior College rodeo team members who clinched the Ranger win in barrel racing at Murry State University March 27-29. The modeling class at Delta State University with their sponsor presented a fashion show on television, Channel 6, Wednesday morning. Marty Shaw fashioned an artistic suit for Spring. Mrs. Zelma Inez Smith Dorris Died March 31, in the Oxford Lafayette County Hospital. Miss Patricia Keith of Water Valley was crowned Miss Teene Yalobusha in the annual pageant held at Coffeeville High School Auditorium Saturday night March 8. Miss Sonnie Burnett was chosen as First Alternante; Deanie Denley, Second Alternate; Carolyn Butler, Third Alternate and Angela Purdy, Fourth Alternate. 40 YEARS AGO April 18, 1985 Mr. and Mrs. Lawson Harbour moved to their home in the Haven Hill Community after having lived in Jackson for many years. Teresa R. Spencer was selected as the STAR Student at Coffeeville High School. She designated Mr. William McEwen, band director, as STAR Teacher.
