85 YEARS AGO

March 10, 1939 Terry Adelia arrived in the home of Mrs. George Edwin Denley of New Augusta Sunday. Mrs. M. O. Chapman, 79, died at her home here Tuesday after an illness of several months. Mr. F. G. Murphee, 62, died at him home near Airmount. His widow is seriously ill and a married daughter, Mrs. Oscar Chapman living in the home, is dangerously ill with pneumonia.

80 YEARS AGO March 10, 1944 A party was given in the home of Miss Virginia Wilbourn in honor of Edward Sayle and Carl Pryor who left for the army Tuesday. Congratulations to Mr. Marvin Weaver, Jr., who has recently been promoted to Ensign in the Navy. Russell Jordan of the Pine Grove section passed away last week. Mrs. Walter E. Irvine left for DeRidder, La., where she will work at an Air Base there. Pfc. Columbus Davis is now at Camp Phillis, Kansas.

75 YEARS AGO March 10, 1949 Miss Elanor Moak, daughter of Elder Moak, has taken over the duties of Secretary at the County Agent’s office, replacing Mrs. Bob Walker who has moved to Clarksdale. Mr. Jimmie Harrison has leased his place of business to Mr. John Bratton and he is entering school in Chicago for an electrical course. Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Wommack, moved Monday to the Dye house, recently vacated by Mr. and Mrs., Rufus Treloar who have moved into their new home.

70 YEARS AGO February 25, 1954 Ed Woodall, Jr., is serving as a page in the Mississippi House of Representatives this week. One of the greatest tragedies our community has ever experienced ocurred Tuesday, March 9, when little Henry Knight was hit by a truck on Highway 7 and killed instantly. It now appears that spring is here, (for a few days at least) although officially the first day of spring isn’t until March 20th. We’ve had a mild winter.

65 YEARS AGO March 12, 1959 John Stone, Senior Air Force ROTC Cadet, has become the first person to receive a Private Pilot’s lingence at the University-Oxford Airport. J. M. Fancher was reelected as Trustee for the Coffeeville School Saturday afternoon. Those who will serve with Mr. Fancher are E. M. Bailey, W. E. Benoist, Hubert Clark, and Aaron Gorden. Avis Brewer, Margaret Williams and Charles Vickery are on the Dean’s List for the last week at NWJC.

60 YEARS AGO March 12, 1964 Eighth graders in Coffeeville School are missing two of their distinguished class members this week as Coley Bailey and Sam Pace serve in the Mississippi House of Representatives as pages. Mrs. Eula (Buddy) French died Monday, March 9, in St. Joseph Hospital in memphis, as a result of burns she received at her home here two weeks ago.

45 YEARS AGO March 8, 1979 Three new Candidates . . .Jim D. Martin enters the race for Supervisor, Beat 1; Powell Jones asks for reelection as Constable, Beat 4; Keith Beardain announces for Supervisor, Beat 4. Jeanne Shaw, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Shaw, is enrolled in Health Care Marketing and Communications, a course for the first year of professional pharmacy students of The Students of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. Mrs. Parvee Rasberry, age 56, died Thursday, March 1, at Yalobusha General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

40 YEARS AGO March 8, 1984 Katie M. Wood, a Coffeeville resident, will accompany the David Lipscomb College a Capella Singers as it conducts its annual spring tour in March. Mrs. Margaret Ross of Oakland, Mrs. Joe Bailey and Mrs. Steve Bailey of Coffeeville, were among the more than 500 librarians, trustees and friends from across the state who attended the State National Library Week workshop and luncheon in Jackson February 28. Students of the President’s List at NWJC from Coffeeville are Virginia Adams, Frederick McRea Burns, Andy Lamar Harrison, and Dewitt D. Harrison included on the Dean’s List is Dwight Harold Vick.

20 YEARS AGO March 4, 2004 Dennis Wayne Bennett, 52, retired from Heatcraft, died at his residence in Grenada, on Tuesday, February 24, 2004, of cancer. A Hunter’s Education Class was held on Saturday, March 13th 2004 at the Multi-Purpose Building on Highway 7 in Coffeeville from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

15 YEARS AGO March 5, 2009 Tommy C. Baker, 67, of Water Valley, MS, died Tuesday January 24, 2009, at the Yalobusha County Nursing Home in Water Valley, MS. Gracie Brooke Hartlein was born at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS on February 26, 2009 to Ashlyn and Chris Hartlein of Oxford, MS. Gracie weighed 7 pounds 7 ounces and was 20 inches long.

10 YEARS AGO March 6, 2014 Jeffery Duane “Doc” Bell, 53, of Ridgeland, MS died Friday, February 21, 2014 in Little Rock, AR. Born September 23, 1960 in Water Valley, MS, he was the son of Barbara and W. R. Newman and Larry and Rachael Bell.February
