90 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 2, 1934 Joe Bailey, Jr. and Aaron Gorden are members of the Glee Club at the University. Perhaps one of the greatest shocks to the people of this section for a long time was the sad news that Mr. Jimmie Wommack was dead. Mr. John Spurgeon is reported as seriously ill at his home near Water Valley.

85 YEARS AGO March 24, 1939 Friday of last week Mrs. Cora Langham, wife of Mr. W. T. Langham, 49, died at her home. The first formal, announcement for County Superintendent of Education is Herman H. White, a splendid young man of the Water Valley section. By his request, we are, this week placing in our announcement column and presenting to the qualified electors the name of A. Y. Donaldson, of Oakland as a candidate for the office of Chancery Clerk.

75 YEARS AGO March 24, 1949 Pauline Landreth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clide V. Landreth, of Oakland, was married to James Franklin Hughes of Greenwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carson Hughes of Enid. Recent sales of homes in Coffeeville include the purchase of the Beadles home from the Richardsons by Ralph Peeples, the purchase of the Lambert home by Earl McCormack and the purchase of the Dye house by Clinton Womack.

65 YEARSAGO FEBRUARY 26, 1959 Mr. and Mrs. Allen C. Bernhard of Greenwood announce the engagement of their daughter, Sarah Grey Bernhard, to Sam Allen Pittman. The wedding will be Saturday, March 7, at the First Baptist Church in Greenwood. Marie Pipkin, Margaret Williams, and Charles Vickery were among the students from NWJC who participated in the State Junior College Choral Festival Friday and Saturday, February 20 and 21, at Hinds Junior College.

60 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 17, 1964 Mr. and Mrs. Jack Peeples received an invitation to Scholarship Day on the Mississippi State University Campus March 31, when their son, Terry Peeples will be among the honored students was named to the Dean’s list. Mrs. Sarah Emily Williams, mother of Howard Williams, died in the Baptist Hospital, Memphis, Tuesday morning February 25. Mrs. Joan Wright, a Junior at Delta State College in Cleveland, was recently elected treasurer of the Mississippi Methodist Student Movement, known on college campuses as the Wesleyan Guild.

45 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 6, 1979 Miss Lori Brower, 16-year-old daughter or Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Brower and a Junior at Coffeeville High School was elected Queen of the FFA Sweetheart Ball Saturday night at the Sweetheart Banquet and Ball at the Holiday Inn in Grenada. Another weekend of reat low temperatures with sleet and icy streets and roads surely must give us a record of unusual winter.

40 YEARS AGO MARCH 1, 1984 Dr. Ralph Criss recently received a 50 year pin and a framed certificate for 50 years of continuous membersip in Coffeeville Masonic Lodge. Arcola Hughes, Jr., is the newly elected secrctary for 1984. M. D. Burns was Master 1983 and W. Y. Parker is the retiring secretary after 30 years of service. Mr. and Mrs. Lofus A. Morrisey announce the engagement of thier daughter, Gina Marie, of Franklin Tennessee, and Bradford Todd Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Miller, Jr., of Coffeeville. The wedding will be May 26 at St. Matthew’s Church in Nashville. La Wanda Vick was chosen CHS Band Queen at the band’s annual Valentine’s Dance Friday, February 10, held at Coffeeville Elementary School Gym. Nancy Boydston was second alternate and Kathy Fly was first alternate. Robert Silas Simmons, 73, retired merchant of Tillatoba, died Thursday, February 23, at his home. Services were Saturday afternoon at National Funeral Home in Grenada with burial in Union Cemetery in Tillatoba. From Coffee Time: We watched with nostalgia– as bulldozer’s pushed the wall of Bates Drug Store into a crumbling heaps last week and hauled the old brick and mortar away.

20 YEARS AGO February 26, 2004 Inez McCullar Flowers, 74, retired liscened practical nurse, died at her residence near Oakland, on Saturday, March 6, 2004. A parade honoring members of the 23rd Battilion, who returned from a 10-month stay in Iraq, will be held Saturday, April 17, at 2:00 P.M.

15 YEARS AGO February 19, 2009 Virginia Louise Gordon, 67, of Water Valley, died Monday, February 23, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital -N MS in Oxford. She was born September 21, 2941, to the late William Parker and Lorene Cobb Donaldson in Shelby Co., TN. She worked alongside her husband in their family business and was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Water Valley.

10 YEARS AGO February 20, 2014 Jeffrey Duane “Doc” Bell, 53, of Ridgeland, MS died Friday, February 21, 2014 in Little Rock, AR. Born September 23, 1960 in Water Valley, MS, he was the son of Barbara and W. R. Newman and Larry and Rachael Bell.Looking Bas
