90 YEARS AGO June 22, 1934 Tuesday morning of this week Clemmie Williams brought in the first cotton bloom of the season, having found the bloom Monday, June 18. Mrs. Eugene Rebecca Patton, aged 81 died at her home at Sylva Rena on Thursday, June 14, after an illness of several days duration. 80 YEARS AGO June 23, 1944 Miss Jean Gore of Ferriday, Louisiana, who is visiting her grandmother, Miss. W. J. Gore, was complimented with a croquet swimming party last Friday afternoon. Guests include Jean and Joan Bailey, Fay Hamilton, Patricia Peeples, Maxim Breedlove, Janet Tufvander and Miss Joy Heron of Glendora and Miss Ellen Moss of Grenada. Friends of Lt. William Perkins will regret to learn that he is in the Army hospital in Italy, after being wounded in action. 70 YEARS AGO June 17, 1954 Miss Ro Ann Landreth left Saturday for Florida where she will be affiliated with the State Hospital for the summer. John S. Throop, Jr., Attorney of Water Valley has announced as a candidate for election to the office of Senator in the special election to be held June 13 due to the resignation of Senator Murray Williams. Laura Jo Burns, Margaret Spivey, Morris Holloway, Robert Williams, Greer Person and Weston Pipkin, 4-H members, are attending Club Congress at State College this week. Vicky Branum, Charles Jones, Gary Meeks, Durfy Muirhead, George (Buddy) Pate, Billy Rowsey, Johnny Rowsey, Wesley Salley and Cecil Shaw will leave Sunday for Camp Yocona. 65 YEARS AGO June 18, 1959 The community was saddened Thursday, June 11, with the report that Creekmore Pipkin, age 52, had passed away in his home after a illness of several months. Miss Shirley Gray will become the bride of James Edwards in a ceremony at the Coffeeville Baptist Church Friday, June 16. Charles David Gibson is at home after three years on the USS Levington. Misses Geneva Harrison and Linda Carol Davis are serving as nurses’ aides at the Baptist Hospital in Selma Louisiana this summer. 55 YEARS AGO June 19, 1969 Coffeeville, Goshen and Gray Rock Methodists, and many others here, are delighted that the Boxes were reassigned to the charge by the North Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church, last week in Oxford. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Fly are announcing the birth of a son, Thomas Jeffrey Fly, who arrived Tuesday, June 10. Phu Bai, South Vietnam Specialist 5 Kelly D. Pollan, of Coffeeville, received the Bronze Star from Meritorious Service here on May 21. At Northwest Junior College two Coffeeville students, Vencena Frith and Sandra Snell achieved the President’s List. On the Dean’s list are Jo Adams, Mike Ayers, Hobson Beeman, Kay Dorris, Bill Jones and Susan Stevens. 45 YEARS AGO June 21, 1979 J. Doyle Varner, Jr., Yalobusha County Agent and Extension Leader, has been named as a member of the 1979 Dow Study Tour sponsored by the National Association of County Agriculture Agents and Dow Chemical, USA. Among the Air Force Training Corp. University of Mississippi, with Lt. Linda C. Wright of Coffeeville. Commissioning ceremonies were held in conjunction with graduation at Ole Miss. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Flowers of Enid are announcing the birth of a son, their first child, born Thursday, June 14. He has been named Justin Dean Flowers. Dr. and Mrs. George W. (Fella) Armstrong, III of Denver, Colorado; are announcing the arrival of a daughter by adoption, in their home. The little lady is 2 1/2 months old and has been given the name Shawn Louise. 20 YEARS AGO June 24, 2004 Velma Cleo Melton, age 81, housewife, died Sunday, June 20, 2004 at Baptist Desoto Hospital. A benefit will be held at the Pittsboro Fire Station on Monday, June 5, 2004, from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM for Terry Joe Turner. Terry Joe drowned on May 30, 2004 at Hawkins Crossing on 315 Highway in Water Valley. He was 25 years old. This benefit is being held to pay funeral expenses. Marie Beshears, an honor student at Kirk Academy, Grenada, was invited to attend the Mississippi Recognition Ceremony for the 24th annual 7th grade talent search at the University of Southern Miss., Hattiesburg, Saturday, June 5, 2004. The talent search was sponsored by Duke University Identification Program, and the University of Mississippi Department of Education. 15 YEARS AGO June 18, 2009 On June 8, 2009, the Lord chose a beautiful flower for His garden. Mrs. Tommie Wilson Willis departed this earthly life shortly after 3:00 PM at Yalobusha General Hospital. Mary Melko Dickey was born on August 26, 1917 in Chicago Illinois. She was the daughter of Ukrainian immigrants, Harry Melko and Catherine Melko. 10 YEARS AGO June 12, 2014 The Coffeeville United Methodist Church will hosts its annual Vacation Bible School, Monday, June 16 and Friday, June 20, each evening, at 6:00 PM through 8:30 PM. The thing this year is “Jungle Safari, where kids explore the nature of God”. Shannon Kahnaee Surette Cain, age 38, died Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tn.
