90 YEARS AGO DECEMBER 11, 1934 On Tuesday night of this week, Mr. Jim Womack, aged about 65 years, died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Claude Womack of the Shiloh Community. Benoist & Co., Coffeeville’s newest store, opened for business last Saturday. At a meeting of the town board this week George Jones was unanimously chosen as night marshal of the town. Harrison Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Jackson of Rosedale, received a great honor recently when he was named on the All-Delta Football Squad. 85 YEARS AGO JANUARY 12, 1940 Alfred Bryant was elected to serve on the Board of Alderman in an election held Tuesday, January 9, to elect a town alderman to take the place of Dr. R. J. Criss who recently resigned. R. B. Scobey has been named by County Supt., H. H. White as a member of the Coffeeville Separate Consolidated School Board. Other members of the board now are: Sellars Denley, Chairman; H. I. Perkins, Secretary; Loyd Farmer and John Brewer. 75 YEARS AGO JANUARY 19, 1950 Aaron Baddley, Jr., suffered an attack of appendicitis Wednesday night of last week and was operated on at the Water Valley Hospital Thursday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Purdy are the proud parents of a baby girl born January 12th and named Ruth Ann. Looks like Coffeeville is going to be well lighted along Main Street with the recently installed neon sign at the theater. 60 YEARS AGO JANUARY 14, 1965 The Coffeeville Lions Club’s new officers for 1965 are Guy Dale Shaw, President; Clyde Pace, Secretary; and Smiley Arrington, 1st, Vice-President. Robert R. “Bob” Criss, Attorney and CPA of Grenada will be a candidate for the unexpired term of Senator Bradford Dye, Jr., of Grenada, who resigned from the office to accept an appointment to the Mississippi Workman’s Compensation Commission. J. L. Williams of Long Beach, Calif., son of Mrs. Emma Williams of Coffeeville, recently received his 30-year Retrement Certificate from the U. S. Navy Department. 55 YEARS AGO JANUARY 15, 1970 Members of the Coffeeville High School girls’ basketball tcam; Beverly Pittman, Clara Vann York, Kay Parker, Karen Rotenberry, Linda Ross, Wanda Briscoe, Donna Few, Judy Wilbourn, Wanda Adams, Susan Snell, Barbara Brandon, Beverly Harbour, and Patricia Barton, were jubilant when they were awarded the championship trophy for victory in the Winona tournament last weekend. 45 YEARS AGO JANUARY 10, 1980 Superintendent George E. Denley will be retiring June 30 after 33 years at the local school. Aaron Burney was elected as Superintendent effective July 1, 1980. Chancery Judge Leon Hannaford administered the oath of office to Yalobusha County officials here Monday morning. They are Terry Peeples, County Attorney; L. A. Jones, Sheriff; Guy Dale Shaw; Tax Assessor-Collector; Mary Sue Stevens; Circuit Clerk. Supt. of Education; Henry Womble was not present. The men who will serve as Supervisors for the next four years are Doke French, Beat 2; L. D. Jones, Beat 3; Richard Ross, Beat 4; Wilford Harbour Beat 1; and Daniel Koonce, Beat 5. 30 YEARS AGO JANUARY 3, 1985 Rev. and Mrs. Page Box were honored on their 50th Wedding Anniversary at a reception given by their children Sunday afternoon, December 23, at the Coffeeville United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Mr. and Mrs. Eldrege (Red) Coleman, Coffeeville are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Cathy Lynn, to Dewilt Harrison IlI, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dewitt Benford Harrison, Jr., also of Coffeeville. E. O. Boyle, age 83, died Tuesday December 25, at Yalobusha General Hospital in Water Valley after a long illness. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 27, at New Hope Baptist Church, where he was a member. 20 YEARS AGO JANUARY 5, 1995 Annie Inez Donaldson Fribble, 78, homemaker, died Friday, December 23, 1994. of heart failure at her home in then Elam Community. Services were 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 24, at Elam Baptist Church, where she was a member, with burial in the church cemetary,
