85 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 2, 1940 On Thursday of this week Forrest Barber and John Brewer took over the filling station formerly operated by E. E. Chapman Coffeeville High School will select a King and Queen at a program at the high school Friday night, February 9. In the running for king are Bobby Burns, George Edward Denley, Elmo Harrison, Leon Hight, James LaCook, Corbett Saucier, John Thomas McClusky, James Noel Pittman and Durwood Wilbourn. In the running for queen are Dorothy Colston, Margaret Denley, Dorothy Harmon, Katherine Jones, Alice Johnston, Annie Ruth Mayo, Janie Riddick, Mary Katherine Rodgers, Ola Ruth Spearman, Mary Alice Taylor, Sally Stone, Robbie Wortham and Aubrey Mae York 75 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 2, 1950 In a list of candidates for degrees from the University of Mississippi we find in the School of Commerce and Business Administration the name of Eugene Crawford Scobey, Coffeeville. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Breedlove announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Maxine Breedlove, to Jessie L. Cox, son of Mrs. R. L. Cox and the late Mr. Cox of Water Valley. The many friends of Mr. Clyde Williams of Memphis, a former citizen of this section, will regret to learn that his condition remains very critical in St. Joseph Hospital, Memphis. Local Boy Scouts receiving awards for past achievements of the Court of Honor at the Baptist Church Sunday morning were Richard Ayers, Tommy McCormack, Richard McCormack, John Ewell Kimbrough, John Stone, Barry Pittman, Aaron Baddley, Jr., J, Russell Bailey, Jr., Ralph L, Peeples, Kelly Hutchins, Leon Floyd and Gale Denley. Cub scout receiving honors at a pack meeting in the home of Cub Scout Edward Woodall, Jr., were Larry Arrington, James Edwards, James Leon Hughes, Charles Jones, Buddy Pate, George Ayers and Edward Woodall. 70 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 3, 1955 Coffeeville is very proud of its “former citizen” Morris Gorden, who is currently the most publicized citizen of Baldwyn. Ms. Morris, the younger brother of Harry Gorden, was selected as “Baldwyn’s Outstanding Man of 1954”. Columbus, Miss. January 27 – Miss Ineita Maude Kuykendall of Oakland has been awarded a scholarship to Mississippi State College for Women, president Charles P. Hogsth, announced this week. We are this week placing the name of Roy E. Johnson, attorney of Senatobia, in our announcement column as a candidate for District Attorney. At a regular monthly meeting of the Coffeeville Chamber of Commerce, held last week, county agent W. Y. Parker was elected president. Other officers named were Aaron Gorden, Vice President, and J. B. Majure, Secretary. 60 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 4, 1965 Brenda Adams, Virginia Sue Arrington, Hilly Griffin, Sue Shaw, Joy Arrington, Jimmy Denley and Sandra Snell, Beta Club members, chose this week as: “Good Sportsmanship Week”. 55 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 5, 1970 The Chairman of the Mississippi Economic Council’s Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition Program announces that Mike Vickery, senior in Coffeeville High School, has been selected as the School’s STAR student. Coffeeville Cub Scouts are Ben Pace, Brad Miller, Frank Pipkin, Criss Byford, Brad Mixon, Shot Harbour, Rusty Mixon, Criss Watts, Ken Purdy, and Roy Edwards III. Sue Mary Shaw has made the Dean’s List the first semester honor roll at MSCW. This community and the entire county lost one of its most devoted citizens in the death of Miss Carolyn Kennedy, who died Tuesday night, February 3. 40 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 7, 1985 A midwinter storm, spawned in West Texas, raced through our section late last week with a full complement or unusual precipitation-rain, snow, sleet and freezing rain. About 4-5 inches of mostly sleet mixed with snow, covered our town and county and all of North Mississippi and really hampered our outside activities. Vanessa Keeler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Keeler, was selected to the University of Mississippi’s Mid South Band. The event was held at Ole Miss January 31-February 2. Vanessa plays the clarinet in the Coffeeville High School Band. Mr. and Mrs. Steve Bailey are happy to announcement the birth of a daughter born Friday, February 1. She has been named Elizabeth Meadows Bailey. Mr. and Mrs. Orlando H. Caravan will celebrate their Golden anniversary with a reception Saturday, February 16, in the fellowship hall of the Oakland Baptist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Denley are proudly announcing the birth of a daughter born Sunday, February 3. She has been named Aramy Ashlyn Denley.
