90 YEARS AGO August 2, 1935 Robert Gray, in the U. S. Navy Stationed on the Pacific Coast, came in this week for a short visit with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Gray. Robert Collins, “Sonny Boy”, Martin and Harold Langham left Sunday for Wilson Dam at Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where they will spend a few weeks in training before entering at CCC Camp in Tishomingo County. 85 YEARS AGO August 2, 1940 After receiving his flying licenses from an aviation school in Adam, Oklahoma, Davis Clements came home last Saturday to spend a few hours with his parents. Marvin, Jr., and Robert Walker and Fitzhugh Brooks, Jr., young men of the Walthall section, left during the weekend for Los Angeles where they will receive instructions in the building of airplanes. Born to Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Fielder of the Gray Rock section the first of the week, a boy. Reports are the little fellow has been named Tom Dawkins. 80 YEARS AGO July 27, 1945 Mr. and Mrs. H. Gorden are in Winchester, Virginia, where they will attend the wedding of their son, Aaron, to Miss Margaret Bloom on July 29. Little Miss Nancy Sue Richards made her arrival in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Richards July 19. 70 YEARS AGO July 28, 1955 The death angel came with the dawn to our community July 27 and claimed the sweet spirit of Mrs. P. M. Woodall. Rev. E. E. Stidham, local Presbyterian minister, has been named Rural Minister of the Year. Miss Lucretia Majure, attractive and talented daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Majure, sang in a special service in the Methodist Church in Philadelphia last Sunday. Mr. John Rushin, aged resident of the Gray Rock Community, died at his home Sunday night after a lingering illness. 60 YEARS AGO July 29, 1965 Clyde S. Pace, Office Manager of the Yalobusha County ASCS office, was presented the “Professional Improvement Award” on behalf of the Miss. Association of County Office employees at the recent state meeting of ASCS County Office Employees in Jackson. Mr. and Mrs. James A. Mahaffy are announcing the birth, of a daughter, Hannah Kay Mahaffy, born Saturday, July 24. Richard Helm,William Hooper are members of the Yalobusha County 4-H Wildlife Demonstration Team that placed first during State 4-H Club Congress at Mississippi State University. 50 YEARS AGO July 31, 1975 Robert A. “Spunky” Walker of Atlanta, 29-year-old son of Bob Walker and the late Mrs. Louise Traylor Walker, was killed in a fall from a building in Pittsburgh, PA, last Thursday, July 24. The Open House for the West Wing of the Yalobusha General Hospital will be Sunday, August 3. 45 YEARS AGO July 24, 1980 The Yalobusha County Board of Supervisors in a specially convened meeting Monday, July 21, ordered that a special election be held in Beat Five to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Dariel J. Koonce who had served 8 1/2 years in that position. Mrs. Blanch Gammon Johnson, mother of Mrs. John Wayne Purdy, died in Grenada Hospital early Tuesday morning. Dariel Jackson Koonce, age 53, died Wednesday, July 16, in Baptist Hospital in Memphis where he had been a patient for several weeks. Funeral services were held Saturday July 19, at First Baptist Church in Water Valley for three year old Byford Calvin “Trey” Sellers, III, who died Thursday night at Yalobusha General Hospital after a swimming pool accident Thursday afternoon. On Thursday afternoon, July 3, Miss Kimberly Carol Warren became the bride of Barry Keith Bell. 40 YEARS AGO August 1, 1985 Mr. and Mrs. Donald W. Wood announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Miss Katherine Marie Wood to Mr. Glen William Anderson, of Louisville, Kentucky. Wedding vows will be exchanged Friday, August 16, at the Coffeeville Church of Christ. Mr. and Mrs. Billy Little, of Starkville, announce the birth of a daughter, their first child, born July 23, at Columbus Air Force Base Hospital. She has been named Elizabeth Anne Little. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pipkin proudly announce the birth of their first child, Lydia Marie, born Friday, July 26, at the Grenada County Hospital. Letrice Kee, a local FHA chapter member, who also serves as secretary for the Block 1 Sub-District C area, attended the 1985 Leadership Development Conference at Lake Tiak O’Khata (Louisville, Ms) July 24.
