The people of the town and community were shocked to hear of the death of Mrs. Rosa Johnson Breland, 65, wife of the late R. L. Breland, who died of a heart attack suffered a few hours earlier.
Following a list of the students of the Coffeeville School making 90 or above for the first six weeks term: Seniors, Dorothy Colston; Juniors, Dorothy Wilbourn; Sophomores, Sally Stone; Freshmen, Marilyn Jeffreys; 8th grade, Martha Spears; 7th grade, Ed Burns, Martha Fancher, Billy Henson and Bob Spears; 3rd grade, Oona Edwards.
Miss Mildred Sayle of MSCW and three of her classmates were guests of Mildred’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Sayle, over the weekend.

Funeral services were held at Clear Springs Church Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. Edna Ralston Spurgeon, 65, widow of the late Bill Spurgeon.
Mr. and Mrs. Hurley Pittman had bought Mrs. Ella Lambert’s place west of town.
Lt. (jg) J. N. Bailey who has been in the Coast Guard for more than two and one-half years, is now in the States and expects to get his discharge and come home by the last of the week.
Lt. and Mrs. Reggie Speir arrived here Tuesday night to visit his relatives in this section. Mrs. Speir who was in the Medical Corps received her discharge last week in California.
John Stone, David Brower and Buster Jackson, Jr., third graders, made the honor roll for the first six weeks of school.

Mr. William Henry Evans, aged 82, died in a Memphis Hospital Sunday, October 28, after an illness of four weeks.
Aaron E. Burney was recently initiated into the Miss. State College Collegiate Chapter of the FFA.

October 27, 1960
Presley Carter Person, Sr., a lifetime resident of Velma, died Thursday, October 20, following a year’s illness.
Misses Betty Lynn Hunt, Georgia Wortham, Nancy McAllister, Patsy Branum, Vivian Johnson, and Virginia Fly, Gary Meeks and Benny Zinn visited in Bruce Sunday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Rayford Boxx are the proud parents of a son, born in Spears Clinic in Water Valley Friday, October 21. He was named Ronald Ray.
Joe Denley and Rosemary Helm, students at NWJC, were listed on the President’s List for the first six-week period.
Thursday night of last week brought the season’s first frost of this area.
The Hopewell Baptist Church was the setting for a beautiful wedding Sunday, October 9, when Miss Barbara Vaughn became the bride of Jimmy Brower.

R. M. Tackett was recently awarded a plaque as a member of the Tenneco, Inc., Quarter Century Club upon completion of 25 years of service with the company. Elbert Wright was awarded a similar plaque.
On Sunday, October 19, Mrs. Ellen Brandon was honored at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Barber, in observance of her 90th birthday, which was October 20.
Mrs. Hattie Barlow Wright, wife of Benson Wright, died Tuesday, October 21, at Care Inn in Holly Springs where she has been for the past three months.
Mrs. Annie Hyde Spearman, 84, widow of Dr. W. A. Spearman, of Water Valley, died Tuesday, October 21, after an extended illness.

Calhoun County newspaper publisher Gale Denley was reappointed Monday to a four-year term on the State Ethics Commission.
Louie Riddick has recently pledged Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity at The University of Mississippi.
Miss Cynthia Bailey was crowned Homecoming Queen for 1989 last Tuesday. Other members of the court are Denise Matthews, Janet Pate, Jennifer Bailey, Patricia House, Vicky Byford, Maxine Boland, Artis Carter and Carolyn Butler.

Present at the Open House for the Tillatoba Post Office Sunday, November 2, were U. S. Postal employees from Yalobusha County, Mrs. Jewel Bloodworth, part time employee at Oakland; Mrs. Charlotte Pollan, Scobey; Hilliard E. Griffin, retired Coffeeville Postmaster and Mrs. Dorothy Riddick, Tillatoba Postmaster.
On Thursday, October 17, “Farmers and Friends of Yalobusha County” honored Mr. James L. Clay and Mr. William A. “Bill” Wilson with a steak dinner at the American Legion Building in Coffeeville.
Mr. and Mrs. Steve Nichols are proud to announce the arrival of a son, Joseph Glenn Nichols, III, on October 28.
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Johnson became the proud parents of a girl born October 24 in Jackson. She was named Ashleigh Adale Johnson. Mrs. Johnson is the former Donna Lynn Harbour.
