Grading, sloping the school ground toward Highway 32 has begun since the rain as I think it would have been impossible to have done it before the rain. Everybody is, and should be, thankful for the showers, which will help everything that has life even the people. If we can get the ‘flatweeding’ done – can plant turnips and other small vegetables now. Another new home has been built right near the John Arnold old former house which has been sold to Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer. They had this small, but very neat house erected for his mother. Sharon Bell, of Forrest City, Ark., and Carolyn Bailey, of Oakland are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Bell. Mr. and Mrs. James Donaldson visited the E. a. Caples of Pontotoc last Thursday. On Saturday, the Donaldsons were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Fitzhugh Brooks and Mitchell of Walthall neighborhood. Mae asked me what in the world had become of the old school house and what was the little house. She seem distressed about the two story old landmark being gone. But Mae had not seen it since it was so delapidated. Couldn’t realize how it looked with the roof caving in. Mr. Beavers, and son, who lived in Oakland a few days ago, but now live in Senatobia were in Oakland Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Patton of Cincinatti, Ohio, visited Mrs. Abble Pritchard and Mrs. Patton’s sister, Mrs. James Moore, Tuesday of last week. Last Thursday Miss Abbles company were her daughter, Mrs. Mason Hughes, of Sunflower, Miss.; Miss Mary Hughes and Miss Nancy Hughes of Memphis; L. Q. Patton of Alabama; Hurley Patton, Mrs. Emma Patton of Water Valley. L. Q. brought his baby who is 4 years old, with him to Water Valley-leaving her with his sister, Mrs. Robert Christian (Marvel) while he visited in Oakland. On the average cigarette smokers throw away about one quarter of each cigarette. Reminds me of an item, or fact, I saw in Roby, Texas Weekly, ‘Roby Star Record’: An American gets scared to death if we vote a billion dollars for education but he is as cool as a cucumber when he hears we are spending 4 billion for tobacco. Today’s favorite gag: “And now”, said the teacher, “Can anyone tell me who was Joan of Arc?” The class was silent a moment, but little Bobby piped up, “Maybe she was Noah’s wife.” They hayride that quite a crowd of young people and several chaperons enjoyed last Thursday night terminated on the Enid Lake where they had supper and played games. The ‘Doll Party’ that Mrs. Mettie Parrish gave Thursday p.m. was enjoyed by these little girls: Pam Brewer, Janet Ross, Janet Brewer, Sandra Brewer, Debra Burns, Rosemary Irby, (who came in Susan Irby’s place, bringing Susan’s doll) Anita Rice and Shelia Pyron, who lives in Grenada but is visiting her aunt, Mrs. McCracken. Rosemary Irby also served as judge. For refreshments they had cookies and coiolaid. Sandra Brewer’s doll was judged the prettiest, thereby winning the prize which was 25¢. Mrs. A. J. Brewerton came up from Greenwood last Thursday and carried Beth home after spending the week with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Wells. Mrs. David Gillette and Bill are spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Ab Sivley. Mrs. Walter Moore Sr., is in Memphis with her children, the Fred Wallace’s and S. O. Boones. Mr. Lee Gilley and son, Denman, of Castro Valley, Calif., spent from friday till’ Sunday with their mother and grandmother, Mrs. W. A. Kerr. Sunday guests were Mr. and Mrs. Tillman Little, Patsy and Gay, of Grenada and Mr. Cheater Kerr of Tutwiler. Mrs. W. A. Kerr is planning to leave the later part of this week for Bay City, Texas. Denman Gillet will accompany her to Bay City, spend a week with the families of Mrs. Kerr’s three children and Mrs. Kerr, then Denman will fly to Castro Valley, Calif., and Mrs. Kerr will return to Oakland. Mr. and Mrs. Loyce Howle, Lake City, Ark., visited Mr. Jenkings Kerr. Other guests of the Jenkins were Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Fred Howle of Truman, Ark., and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Howle and 3 children of Iowa, but am, sorry don’t know the town. Mrs. Jenkins Kerr attended the Fly reunion which was held on the Grenada Lake Sunday, July 29th. Dwight Robinson of Senatobia, visited Mrs. Abble Pritchard Sunday. Miss Abble said they were so glad to see each other. Mr. and Mrs. Steve Latza, Stevie and Helene left last Wednesday to visit some of their Air Force friends in Biloxi and returned Saturday night. Mrs. Bagwell, of Water Valley Nursing Home, passed away last Sunday night and was buried in Antioch’s Church Cemetery near Bruce. Mrs. Bagwell was a sister to Mrs. Patton. Mr. and Mrs. Hardy Benson visited their son, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Benson, in Batesville Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. James Moody, of Shaw, carried their daughter, Jean, up to Oxford Sunday to attend a churchleader’s school next week. They visited Mr. and Mrs. Callaway. Mrs. A. J. Brewerton, of Greenwood, came to get her daughter, Beth, who had spent a few days with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wells. Mrs. O. D. Partain, Marks, visited her mother, Mrs. Patton, Sunday. Mrs. A. L. Davenport, of Tupelo, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ford. Mr. and Mrs. John Braddley Ford, Linda and David and Mr. and Mrs. David Ford and baby of Darling, spent Sunday with the Roy Fords. The speaker at the Methodist Church for the 5th Sunday service was Mrs. Smith, who is a niece of Rev. Perkins. Debra Burns went home with the David Porters Sunday to spent until Tuesday. Mrs. Ethel Howe was so glad to see one of her childhood neighbors one day recently when Mr. Richard Fowler who had not seen Mrs. Howe in 60 years came by to see her.
