The American Legion met at Enid Lake last Saturday night and the following men were named for officers: Tom Frank Bonner commander; Mr. Van Brewer, Vice com.; William Priddy, 2nd commander; Walter Moore, Jr., 3rd Commander; W. C. Calloway, Adjutant; Sam B. Herron, Jr., service officer. About thirty men attended. Also held in conjunction with American Legion meeting was the organization of a Booster’s Club with these as officers: Charles Hill, President; Charles Crenshaw, vice president and Thomas Holland, secretary-treasurer. The first meeting is to be held in the school auditorium next Thursday night, September 20, at 7:30. All patrons who are interested in Athletic Activities, and especially the ladies, are urged to attend. Dues for the year will be $1.00 for ladies; $2.00 for men, $3.00 for the couple. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gibbs of Grenada, visited their daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jake Gibbs, in the Callaway home last Friday. Another visitor to mrs. Jake Gibbs recently was her aunt, Mrs. E. A. (Katheryn Monteith) Hulgan, Batesville, who spent Thursday with her. Miss Rosie Morrison, of Utica, stopped for a visit with Mrs. Gibbs last Tuesday enroute to Ole Miss for this term of school. Mrs. Beulah Adams, of Biloxi, visited her brother, Mr. Lee Jones, a few days last week. We were so glad to have visitors Sunday afternoon Mrs. david Porter, Teresa and Cindy, Miss sue Peacock, all of Coffeeville; Sammie Tilghman of Grenada. Frankie Davidson has a good job with Arkansas Cement Cooperation in Memphis. Frankie went to Arkansas, I believe, Tuesday of last week, arranged it and will start work Wednesday, September 19th. Aubrey Mitchell visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Davidson during the weekend. Another guests in the Davidson home was Carl’s father, J. W. Davidson, of Greenville, from Wednesday to Sunday when Frankie carried him home. Mrs. Lee Burt is visiting Mr Burt who has work in Memphis now, and also her daughter, Mrs. Clide Williams, Mr. Williams, Cindy and Roger. Mr. and Mrs. Authur Massey, J. B., Mr. and Mrs. Durret Bailey and Peggy went to Memphis saturday. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Jones, Andy, of Water Valley, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Jones and Barbara, of Batesville, were to see their father, Mr. Lee Jones, Sunday. Clifford and Jessie Lee carried Mr. Jones out for dinner. Mrs. Pullen, of Memphis State, visited the Herrons and while there she accompanied them to Grenada Retirement Home to see Me. Vernon. They were so glad to find him doing so well. Dean Herron, Tommy Hill, June Davidson, Jimmie Lee Cook, Linda Gail Carvin, Billie Arnold, Mac Haynes, James Cook, Ronnie Smith, Roble Tubberville and Sandy Timmons were all home from NWJC for the week-end. Spencer Bailey, who has had work this summer in Alaska, has returned home to continue his studies at Miss. State. Mrs. Aubrey Herron and Mrs. Hartzell, of Enid, attended a Training Union at Wrenwood near aberdeen last Wednesday. The football game, Oakland and Water Valley, last Friday night drew a large crowd from Oakland and our boys did some good hard playing, even tho they got beat in scoring. Misses Barbara and Charline Magee, Judy Arnold, Margaret Ferguson, Patricia Carvan, Clydie Tillman left Sunday to enroll as students at Delta State. Mrs. Magee and Charlene went to Memphis Saturday. Mrs. Magee, accompanied by Mrs. Janelle Horton and Rev. Prewitt, Mrs. Prewitt attended a teacher training course (for teaching young people) over at Camp Lake Stephen at Oxford one day last week. Mr. and Mrs. James Criss spent Saturday and Sunday in Memphis with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Lovejoy. Dr.’s birthday was last Thursday—so they had a delayed celebration Saturday and probably Sunday. Dr. George Shannon Lovejoy and three children stoped by to see Mr. and Mrs. Criss Friday on the way to Jackson to take their oldest daughter, Sue Ellen, to go to college. We are so sorry to learn that Mrs. Will Holloway, Jr., is a patient in the hospital. She has pneumonia. Her brother, Manchie Fly, and family went to see her this morning, finally her some better than she was Saturday. Certainly do wish you a quick recovery Cassie Rie. Mrs. Ann Fly and Katie Clanton, who is Ann’s roommate in Grenada, visited Ann’s family for a while Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Sartain, or Batesville, and Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Partain, of Marks, and with them were their grandchildren, Ken and Michael Collins, of Starkville, visited Mrs. Luna Patton Sunday. Late Sunday afternoon Mrs. Patton, with the Partains and Collins children, visited Mr. and Mrs. Creed Coaten, Billy and David, of Grenada. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Moore, Sr., were supper guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Bryant at the lodge on the farm Sunday night. Had a very enjoyable time. Walter Moore, Jr., goes to Jackson for the special session Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Brasher, Jr., visited her sister, Mrs. Walter Moore, Jr., Sunday. Lee Moore visited his grandmother, Forrest, in Grenada last Wednesday till Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Bell of Coffeeville, visited the James Moore’s a little Sunday. They failed to find Mr. and Mrs. Bells at home. Mrs. Pete Baddley and Mrs. John Auger visited in Oakland Saturday. Mrs. Robert Hayden and son, Don, of Greenville, visited briefly Sunday morning with her aunt, Mrs. C. V. Landreth. On Tuesday the Home Demonstration Club met in the home of Mrs. Clide Robinson with 13 of the 16 members. Mrs. Bell’s subject was flower arrangements. Mrs. J. R. Magee will be the leader in the study course for today, the subject is “Dimensions of Prayer” begins at 2 o’clock. Mrs. Mac Allison, of sub-district five, was the guest speaker at the meeting of the WSCS last Monday, September 10, in the home of Mrs. Wells. She spoke on “Missions in a Modern World.” There were 11 members with four members of the Guild present.
