Mr. and Ms. L. A. Walker were happily surprised last Sunday morning when about 40 of his relatives came to spend the day with them. On Friday, 14th, Mr. Walker had his 80th birthday. Since the relatives could not be with him on that day they surprised him with the shower of gifts on Sunday and brought more than enough food for all. Those who enjoyed this occasion with Mr. and Mrs. Walker were Mrs. Nettie Walker, sister-in-law, age 86, of Water Valley, another sister-in-law, Mrs. Cynthia Walker, age 84, of Pontotoc. Others who came we’re Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Walker, Shirley and Rebecca; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Walker, Anita, Terry and Debby; Mr. and Mrs. Jesie Parker and Pamela all of Oxford; E. C. Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Walker, Mike and Benny of Memphis; Z. W. Mooney, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Mooney and Steve of Jackson; Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Mooney of Oxford; Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Mooney and A. W., Jr., Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Mooney and Emmie Lou, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Backham, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Gibson, all of Clarksville; May Walker Barber, Lorene Walker, Water Valley; and Mrs. Clara Walker Gooch of Tocopola. The day had been a very happy one made so by these relatives who wished Mr. Walker many more happy birthdays and it was a day that will long be remembered. Misses Mary and Ruth Donaldson were guests of Dr. and Mrs. Frank Donaldson in Jackson and Lake Bruin, LA., for a few days last week. Miss Jane Lester and brother, Memphis, Tennessee, and Pope, Mississippi, visited Mrs. Lizzie Pittman Sunday. The Woman’s Club met with Mrs. Pittman Thursday afternoon with eight members present. The United Presbyterian Women Organization met with Mrs. Aubrey Herron last Thursday night. Mrs. Mary Smith was the leader. The Junior football team played Lambert last Thursday night and won 13-0. The Bridge Club Luncheon met at Mr. Magee’s Clubhouse Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Jake Gibbs, of “Baseball Yankees”, (New York) and Oakland, became parents oh a baby boy Saturday morning at 8:29 in the Baptist Hospital, Memphis. The baby weighed 8 pounds, 14 ounces, 23 inches long and was named Michael Dean. He is the parents’ first, and also grandparent Calloway’s first grandchild. At the same minute of the Gibbs baby’s birth another baby was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Brasfield in the Coahoma County Hospital, Clarksdale, Mississippi. This Little lady weighs 8 pounds, 4 ounces, 20 inches long and will be called Melaine Lucille. She is also her parents first child, and grandpa and grandma Fly’s second grandchild. Vicki Blakely is the other grandchild. Mr. and Mrs. Brasfield both died late last winter or early spring. Mr. and Mrs. Manchie Fly, Mrs. Jimmie Blakely, Vicki, Miss Ann Fly, Bettie and Charles also, I suppose all went to Clarksville Sunday and visited Mary, Jimmie and baby. They also visited Mrs. Bettie Fowler while in Clarksdale. Mr. Billy Calloway, son, Billy, and Mr. Jack Craig and little Jack attended Mississippi State— Florida ball game Saturday. Mrs. Maude Miller and Butch, of El Dorado, Arkansas, Mrs. J. P. Baker, Pat, of Oxford, and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Burt of Kilmichael, spent the weekend with parents and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Bell. Vernon Herron went to spend the weekend with Melvin Toole and attended the ball game of Ole Miss and Memphis State. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Callaway, Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Holland, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Jones and Andy, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Jones and Barbara attended the christening of little Elis, baby daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Era Holland, of Memphis Saturday. The Oakland Football feild was a place of expectancy, (should I say hopeful), Friday night when a “plumb mob” of Oakland fans seated themselves on th south side of the feild and Sardis fans on the north side of the bleachers. The Sardis’ red skirted cheerleaders and Oaklands’ green skirted cheerleaders made it more lively with Sardis’ band. Our “feathers began to fall” when Sardis climbed up to 14 to Oakland’s 0, and didn’t “fluff up” a bit just a few minutes before the end—when David Bailey made a touchdown— so of course 40-6 sounds a lot better than 40-0. This was the first head information as I attended for the first time and I hope I didn’t “spook the game.” I played baseball in town by Walthall school, but that was before football was played in high schools. We notice in the paper so much now, what some fellows called a “old timer.” Well, a good example, according to my idea, is someone who remembers the home grown blackgum toothbrushes. I found some when I was at my old home place Friday and they taste as good as they did when we had no other kind. Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Howe visited with some of Irene’s relatives over at Louisville Mississippi Saturday and Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Strickland and Mrs. Stella Deaton visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Brewer for the weekend. Mrs. Dean will spend a few days with the Brewers. Mrs. S. O. Boone, Buddy Boone, Fred Wallace, and a friend, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Walter Moore, Sr., and will return to Memphis Monday. Mrs. Ella Mae Sayle has returned to Jackson after spending a couple of weeks with the Misses Sayle. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Briscoe, of Scobey, and Miss Mary Smith attended Sunday the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Wooten of Coahoma. Sunday afternoon Milton, Semmie, Donny, Debra and Karen carried me by Mrs. Adams to spend time with them (Miss Pearl, Mittie Lee, Ollie, and Ben) while they went to Coffeeville and visited Mr. Sessum’s family. I enjoyed hearing them talk and to be with them so much. When Milton’s family returned Mrs. Irma Clark was with them to spend a few days with her niece, Mrs. Milton Burns. Mr. and Mrs. Clide Landreth visited Mrs. Myrtle Crisp in Hernando yesterday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Dewey were also there. Clide and Mattie visited, ate dinner with Dean Landreth’s family in Olive Branch. The Home Demonstration Club is planning to attend the annual program planning day at the Extension Building in Water Valley next Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Tillman Little, Patsy and Gay, of Grenada, visited Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Kerr Sunday.
