Mr. H. L. Smith was elected Mayor of Oakland Tuesday; Mr. Johnny Green, Marshal; and Mr. R. L. Matthews, Mr. W. E. Swearengen, Mr.George Pritchard. Mr. Pryor Bailey and Mr. Wallace Pritchard, Alderman. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Benoist and family, who have been living in Memphis where Mr. Benoist has been working in the railroad shop, are back at home and will resume charge of his service station, across from the post office.

Mr. and Mrs. C. E. (Cliff) Wilbourn passed their fiftieth wedding anniversary on September 28th. Burglars broke into J. H. Bates & Co. Saturday night and got away with loot estimated to be worth about $140.

Miss Marie Simpson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Simpson, was one of the Queen’s Maids in the homecoming activities at Northwest Junior College last weekend.

A pall was cast over our community Saturday morning when the report came that Mr. Doc Pate had died at the home of his daughter in Houston, Miss where he had been for some months. Toxie Ann Fortinberry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Toxey Fortinberry of Water Valley, became Queen of the Forest for Yalobusha County in the annual contest held September 29th in the Water Valley Junior High School. First alternate was Miss Carol Ingram and Babs Chittom was named second alternate.

Eagér minds get early start with Mrs. David (Mary Ann) Page and her kindergarten pupils, Louie Riddick, Eva Sides, Cassandra Mahaffy, Brad Peeples, John Nelson Covington, Sherri York and Scott Purdy. From International Correspondence Schools, Scranton, Penn., comes the announcement that John Wayne Purdy has completed Highway Engineering with that institution.

Mrs. John Arrechea’s kindergarten class, which she teaches in her home in Sunny Acres is made up of twelve pupils. They are Joe Arrechea, Todd Hughes Katherine Arrechea, Marsie Montgomery, Susan Oakes, Mark Price, Andy Harrison, Steve Gray, Jim Arrington, Smiley Arrington and Vonda Varner. The Coffeeville Chapter of the FFA is being led by the following officers: Ronald Ramage, reporter; Benny Walker, treasurer; Jerry Green, president; James Aldy, sentinel; Billy Melton, chaplain: Alton Pollan, parliamentarian; Bubba Tillman, secretary; and Ralph Boyle, vice- president. In an impressive ceremony on Sunday, September 21, in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church, Miss Nell Fancher and Mr. James Colon McGee were united in marriage.

In a special meeting at the Coffeeville Democratic Executive Committee rescinded the certification of L. A. Jones, the party’s county nominee for sheriff. No new nominee was named, but an 11-member sub-committee was appointed to investigate charges of irregularities in the August 28 second primary election. Cathy Fielder was among the ten agents of the Tupelo District Life and Casualty company of Tennessee who was honored for outstanding sales and service to policyowners during 1979. Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Benoist announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Miss Bronwyn Beth Benoist, to Walton Young Parker, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Walton Young Parker, Sr. Mrs. Lillie Neely Henry of Charleston died Thursday, September 27, at Tallahatchie General Hospital and Extended Care Facility.

Holly Hicks, 14-year-old daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Carlton Hicks of St. Simons Island, Georgia and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hutchins of Coffeeville, recently won the Georgia State Championship Senior Equitation Division ages 13-17 as well as the Grand Championship at the State Championship horse show in Atlanta. From COFFEEVILLE TIME: Our first frost –a early light one– was in evidence early Monday morning, October 1st, when the temperature dropped to 38 degrees. James Vardaman Clay, 73, of Collinsville, died Friday, September 14, at Meridian Regional Medical Center, he was the father of James L. Clay.
