90 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 1, 1935 Joe Bailey, Jr., is receiving the congratulations of his many friends over having completed his course of studies at the University and received his diploma at the close of the first semester last week Jas.W.Frost is the first entry into the race for county superintendent of education. Chas. L. Early is a candidate for reelection to the office of tax assessor of Yalobusha County: J. A. Massey, candidate for Supervisor, Beat Four. Brother James Estel Scrivner died last Saturday. He was one of the few remaining ex-confederate soldiers. He was making his home with his daughter, Mrs. W. A. Holloway, who lives four miles west of Coffeeville. 80 YEARS AGO JANUARY 26, 1945 The following girls have been awarded gold medals for the work done in their 4-H Club projects: Opal Williams, Jeff Davis, Dress Revue and Clothing Achievement: Judyth Kuykendall, Oakland, Dress Revue; Dorothy Terrell, Jeff Davis, Dress Revue; Sue R. Horton, Oakland, Dress Revue; Annie Mae Terrell, Jeff Davis, Canning Achievement and Victory garden; Gilda Lynn Jones, Jeff Davis, Victory Garden. Pvt. Harold Jones who was recently inducted into the Army at Camp Shelby is now at Camp Fannin, Texas. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Jones of Benwood. The Coffeeville Home Demonstration Council held the first meeting Saturday, January 20. Those present were: Walthall Club, Mrs. Bob Walker, Mrs. E. C. Jones, Mrs. Edward Jefferys; Scuna Valley Club, Mrs. D. E. Spearman, Mrs. C. Y. Spearman, Mrs. C. V. York; Gray Rock Club, Mrs. W. C. Hodges, Mrs. Frank Groves, Mrs. Dickey, Mrs. Jim Thornton, Mr. and Mrs. Q. T. Crowson and Margie Mulholland, Home Agent. 75 YEARS AGO JANUARY 26, 1950 Parker Motor Company is no longer a part of our town as Edgar Parker has this week vacated the building across the railroad track and moved his tools and work benches to his home north of town. From Oakland News: Mrs. Will Burns and daughters, Lula Beth and Mattie Frances, visited Mr. Burns last Sunday at Kennedy Hospital, Memphis, and found him slowly improving. 60 YEARS AGO JANUARY 28, 1965 Few happenings have so shocked and saddened this community as did the sudden death of Jack Terry Peeples, Sr. last Thursday afternoon, January 21. Miss Eleanor Lou McCormack, a graduating senior in English at Delta State College in Cleveland, has been selected to appear in the 1964-65 Who’s Who in America Colleges and Universities. 55 YEARS AGO JANUARY 29, 1970 Funeral services for Pfc. Billy G. Harrison, who was killed in Vietnam, were held at Pine Grove Baptist Church January 28. Rev. Page Box, pastor of Coffeeville United Methodist Church, was elected president of the Mississippi Church and Community Leadership Institute at Miss. State University, January 19-21. Linda Ross has been named Coffeeville Consolidated High School’s Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow. Miss Mary Alice Moorman will accompany Linda Ross,. Kaen Rotenberry, Linda Tierce, Jesse Tillman, Dianne Kerr, Wanda Briscoe and Linda Lou Gore, members of the CHS Future Business Leaders of Tomorrow, to Oxford this weekend where they will participate in the State FBLA Convention. Sam Pace, sophomore honor student at Mississippi State University, has been elected as the Chairman of the Committee of 82 at the University. 45 YEARS AGO JANUARY 31, 1980 Miss Jill Arrington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Smiley Arrington, was crowned 1980 Homecoming Queen at festivities held at Yalobusha Academy Friday night January 25. Donna Pezzillo was recently initiated into Delta Sigma Pi International Business Fraternity at Mississippi State University. Mr. James Fred Fry, age 86, died Thursday, January 24, at Yalobusha General Hospital at Water Valley. 30 YEARS AGO JANUARY 31, 1985 Members of the Coffeeville Pirates boys’ basketball team – Bernard Blissett, Tyrone Townes, William Johnson, John Dudley, Wesley Logan, Pat Gray, Fredrick Lewis, John Tanner, Melvin Gray, Michael Horton, Kip Profit, Kent Garner, and Sammy Johnson were named Pontotoc Ridge Conference Champions. Carl Parker. Jr. was honored at a banquet at Jordan’s Cafe Tuesday night, January 22, upon his retirement from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife after 33 3/4 years of service as conservation officer for Yalobusha County. Cherita Chandler was presented with a set of World Book Encyclopedias from Jayce S. Smith, Division Manager. Cherita was recommended for this honor by Coffeeville Elementary School. Horace W. McCammon, age 82, died Thursday, January 24, at his home here after suffering a heart attack Funeral services were held Saturday January 26.
