Thrilling Thursday at Coffeeville June 5 “Thrilling Thursdays” at Coffeeville Public Library are free programs for older children and youth on Thursdays 4:00 – 5:00 PM. Come join the fun this Thursday, June 19, at 4:00 when we will make musical instruments. Supplies will be provided, but if you want to make more instruments, bring an empty water or soda bottle (washed) with top, coffee can, or empty tissue box. Programs are free, and no registration is required. We always appreciate volunteers to help with craft programs when extra hands are needed. “Color Our World” Summer Library Program This year’s Summer Library Program theme is “Color Our World,” and we have exciting free programs planned for elementary age children and youth. We are exploring color in nature, animals, music, art and more. The program is free, but registration is requested. Our third week was “Color Our World with MUSIC” on Monday, June 16 at Coffeeville and Wednesday, June 18, at Oakland. Next week, we will “Color Our World” with ART. Programs are Monday, June 23, 1:30 PM at Coffeeville and Wednesday, June 5, 1:30 PM at Oakland. Virtual SLP story times each week are shared on the YCPLS Facebook page or our YouTube Channel, Kids’ Stories from Yalobusha County Library. YCPLS Summer Reading Challenge June 9 – August 1 Yalobusha County Public Library System sponsors a free Summer Reading Challenge for children and youth this summer June 9 – August 1. Children ages 3 – 14 may participate and win one (1) free book and a prize for every five (5) chapter books or ten (10) easy story books they read. All books must be checked out of Coffeeville or Oakland Public Library. Children who do not read may have books read aloud to them. Ask for a Reading Record at your library, and start reading. When the child has read five chapter books or ten easy books, bring the Reading Record to the library to claim their free book and prize. It’s that simple! No registration required. The program is free and open to all area children and youth. Second Lady’s K- 8 Reading Challenge America’s second lady Usha Vance has announced the “Summer Reading Challenge,” encouraging children across the country to open up a book this summer. “Adventure, imagination, and discovery await – right between the pages of a book. We are excited to invite all children (K-8) to participate in the Second Lady’s 2025 Summer Reading Challenge,” the second lady’s letter stated. Children are encouraged to read 12 books of their choice between June 1 and Sept. 5, 2025, and track their progress through a reading log issued by the White House. Copies of the Reading Log are available at Coffeeville and Oakland Public Library. The National Center for Education Statistics found in a 2022 report that the average reading scores among 9-year-old students declined five points compared to 2020, marking the largest average score decline in reading since 1990. Approximately 40% of U.S. students cannot read at a basic level, according to the National Literacy Institute. Children who complete the Second Lady’s 2025 Summer Reading Challenge will receive a personalized certificate and a small prize. Find more information at: https://www.whitehouse.gov/read/ Libraries Closed July 4 Coffeeville and Oakland Public Libraries will be closed Friday, July 4, for the July Fourth holiday.
