Summer Library

Program Registration May 18 – 29

Registration for “Unearth a Story” SLP for elementary age children begins this week at Coffeeville or Oakland Public Library. Parents, grandparents, or legal guardians may register children entering grades K – 6 at either library Monday, May 18 through Friday, May 29.

This summer, we will be digging into exciting stories about reptiles, paleontology, dinosaurs, archeology, gardening, and America’s history. Our first program will be Live Reptiles on Monday, June 1, at both libraries with Jackie Kerr from the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.

Studies show that children who read during the summer retain or improve valuable reading skills over the summer months. Parents of elementary age children are encouraged to register kids at Coffeeville or Oakland Public Library for “Unearth a Story” Summer Library Program. The first 60 children registered in the Summer Library Program receive a free book, SLP “Unearth a Story” program packet, and lots of other incentives.

Homeschool Hangout May 21

Homeschool Hangout meets at Coffeeville Public Library every third Thursday at 4:30 for homeschool families to enjoy unstructured library time. Homeschoolers and families are invited to join us for fun and games on Thursday, May 21, at 4:30.

Libraries Closed

Memorial Day May 25

Libraries will be closed on Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day.

Spring Book Club May 28 at Coffeeville

Coffeeville Public Library will host a Spring Book Club Thursday, May 28. The book to be discussed is Theo of Golden by Allen Levi, a recently published novel which has received numerous awards and accolades. Books were provided free by the Mississippi Library Commission. The group will gather Thursday, May 28 at 5:30 to share a meal and discuss this wonderful book. First Books for First Readers

Members of Friends of Coffeeville Library and Director Patty Bailey delivered brand new hardback books to every first-grade student at Coffeeville Elementary School on Tuesday, May 12. Friends’ members Debbie Brooks, Christine Fielder, Carole Martin, and Jan Dean Wortham read to the children and presented each child with their own Pete the Cat book which contained several stories for the children to read and enjoy.

First Books for First Readers is a project begun by Coffeeville Friends many years ago to give each CES first grader the gift of a book to encourage and to inspire a love of books and reading. Friends’ members look forward to this event every year and hope the students are just as excited to receive and read their new books.

Summer Library

Program Starts June 1

Our exciting “Unearth a Story” Summer Library Program will kick off Monday, June 1, with the fabulous Jackie Kerr from the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and reptiles. Jackie will present an exciting live reptile program at Oakland at 10:00 AM and at Coffeeville at 1:30 PM.

This program is intended for elementary age children who are registered in the Summer Library Program at Coffeeville or Oakland Public Library. However, we open this program to children and families as space permits.
